While continuing my hunt for a new wallet, I happened upon this little number looking lonely in the sale section of Nordstrom.  The price was reduced well over 50%, so I thought to myself, “Hey, isn’t your birthday just a few days away?  Don’t you deserve a little me-gift?  Wouldn’t this teeny bag look adorable slung over your shoulder?” and then, without much more consideration a self-gift was purchased.  In an attempt to justify the purchase as a “necessary present”, I’m going to try to resist breaking it out until my actual birthday…but with its teeny baby size and sun-shaped clasp, I can already tell this is going to be a challenge!

I’m sure you remember the pink fringed convertible purse I’ve featured before… well here it is in a dark chocolate brown! This is a more classic color, definitely more mature and formal!

Here is a sweater that we styled for New Year’s , and it comes in 3 delicious colors! For reference, the sweater we used is the last one. The other two are a blue-gray and cream. I love the blue-gray because it’s such a unique shade. And the cream is great because the shimmer is toned down a little bit, so it’s a tad less glitzy.

I absolutely adore the body-con dress I wore for New Years. The fabric is amazing because it’s super form fitting without being restrictive. I find that bandage dresses tend to be less flattering in that respect. Well, that lovely pink dress also comes in classic black.

I think this dress is a great introduction piece to the mesh and paneled trend because it’s so flattering. The cutouts are strategically placed create an hourglass silhouette and compared to its pink counterpart, this one is monochrome, which makes it easy to wear and accessorize.

Here are some other fun faux fur vests by Akuadani from our Culver City store… they’re not exactly like the one Madison wore (same brand though!), but I thought they were so unique that I had to share. I mean, how often do you see blue and pink fur anyway? The first piece is more of a coral/ salmon shade, and the second is gray with just a tinge of blue.

For example, the younger me did not like to carry a purse. I didn’t want my life to feel encumbered by an object that I had to hold on to. I did have one, but the insides were very minimalist. It consisted of a wallet with a driver’s license, a couple of credit cards and a few coins, a small hair brush, a pen, a lode of lint, receipts from everything I’d bought in the previous months, and at times my car keys. Most of the items could stuff easily into the pockets of my jeans, and if I found it convenient, that’s exactly where I put them.

Once I had kids my purse life turned upside down. It started with the diaper bag. It didn’t take long before I learned the value of taking as much with me on any and every outing as I possibly could. That bag became an extension of me and set the pace for my future in purse carrying requirements. Before any trip to any possible location my purse and the bag would be filled with items such as diapers, diaper rash ointment, bottles, crackers, juice, at least two changes of clothes (for the kids and for me), books, crayons, paper, toys, granola bars… You get my drift.

Now the kids are gone, but I still cling to the belief that you can never take too much with you , anywhere.  My over forty philosophy on the purse is that this crazy handbag is meant to provide me with as much security and assistance in any given situation as possible.  To start with, the contents of my wallet has grown to nearly ridiculous proportions over the years. It not only holds my driver’s license and a few credit cards, but it also holds my check book (yes I still use one!), a pen, all of my health insurance information, membership cards to any and every store I’ve ever been to that has them, punch cards that are probably in many cases obsolete, gift cards, a phone list, and a wide assortment of receipts. The coin part of my wallet has a few coins, but it also holds bobby pins and paper clips and buttons and safety pins.

When I open my purse I often times take a deep breath before I dive inside. After the wallet I keep items such as toothpaste, lotion, a corkscrew, a couple of knives, a nail file or two, my cell phone, mints, a bottle opener, extra car keys, chap stick, sunglasses, more receipts, Tylenol, and so on. Scattered around the bottom at any given moment are at least a couple of bucks in change, more paper clips and safety pins and buttons, enough lint to fill a shot glass, coupons that may or may not be expired, tampons, an extra pen or two, a one-time use CPR mask, eye liner and mascara. And no, none of it is in the least bit organized.

And I know I’m not the only one with such an array of miscellany in her handbag.  Other woman carry hand sanitizer, toilet paper, toilet seat covers, sweet and low packets, IPods, salt and pepper, crackers, more make-up than I even own, sun screen, dog biscuits, a whistle, a flashlight,… must I go on?

I have never owned a really organized purse. And I’m quite certain that says something about my personality. Over the years I have learned that I do like to be prepared, but I don’t compartmentalize the contents of my handbag. Although I’m sure that there are women out there who carry a nice and orderly purse.  I can think of a few ladies I know that just might fit that category.

I know women who carry no purse at all who I supposed subscribe to the ‘keep me unencumbered’ philosophy. There are women who carry what look like baby purses that I’m sure only fit a piece or two of ID and a scant amount of cash.  Some women practically carry a suitcase (I’d love to know the contents of those things!), and some, like me, carry what I would consider a medium sized bag.  I know women who have a purse to go with every outfit, women who could care less and happily carry a purse they picked up at the local discount store, and women who enjoy a nice designer purse that cost more than they make in a week.

It seems that a women’s purse would make for an interesting study.  Neat and tidy, messy and full of an olio of items, small or large in size, designer made or thrift store quality – I can only guess what any of it means.  Think about it, what does your purse say about you?
