The Purse d’Resistance is now a Backpack!

Purse d'Resistance

Purse d'Resistance

Last summer, the Purse d’Resistance was created to carry all the necessities during a month of travel.   Unfortunately, somewhere in the creative process, visual and textural interest trumped common sense.

As a result, the base and body of a purse that was specifically made to travel through 5 airports, two train stations and multiple subway rides, was constructed of a beautiful, albeit structurally-challenged, apricot colored silk dupioni.  Not my best engineering moment.

Even with metal purse “feet”, a purse base sewn from a light-colored silk is just not going to survive a summer of travel.

So, a remake, an upcycle, a re-engineering took place.

The Backpack d'Resistance

The Backpack d'Resistance

The embellished flap and hardware was re-used to create the Backpack d’Resistance.

The body of the backpack is a coral linen left over from an ill-fated attempt to sew a dress.

Having learned a lesson about purse bases and light colors, I added a layer of dark brown ultrasuede to form the base.

The development of the pattern required much more time that it really should have.  There are more than a few backpack patterns available.

However, I did not want a drawstring -I don’t trust them – I believe drawstrings all hail from the 1960′s and seize every opportunity to cry “BE FREE” and release everything!

The dimensions I finally decided upon were those of a paper bag from a gift store!

Three snaps hold the backpack securely closed.

The straps are simple brown grosgrain ribbon. The vertical seams in the fabric are leftovers from the attempted dress, but worked perfectly for lower strap placement on the back.

The lining is a beige/white giraffe print.  Interior pockets were the same as those in the Destashification Make-Up Bag.

Another lesson learned from my early purse making experiments is that purses must be lined in a light color – dark colors create a “black hole”.  Dark purse interiors make it impossible to find anything!   Now, if technology could just develop a ink-pen-proof light colored fabric for purse linings!

Embellishing is the Fun Part!

Embellishing is the Fun Part!

When time allows I will post the pattern and a tutorial for the backpack.  The flap is perfect for all that fun embellishment!

Sew and So

I love to sew. I do latch hooking, cross stitch and quilting. Not been doing it for long at all, but i do love it.

I also made my own purse (was very wonky but I love it)*image below!*

My cat, Clover loves the latch hook rug I made*image above!*

And then theres another smaller rug i have in progress of a Tiger cub, and 2 small cross stitches I did for other people. I have more but no pictures. *images below!*

TTFN!

let me look in my purse

I was sorely tempted to ski again today but alas I acted responsibly and finished up making a few purses. One of these is for a friend- she gets first dibs- but the others I’ll be listing on etsy in the next day or so.

Erica on Fashion

You would think that living in the eighth worst city in the world for fashion would put a damper on this girl’s career, but Erica Wark has become Ottawa’s style guru, and she is seeing the profits.

“I couldn’t have done this in any other city,” said Wark. “Ottawa is the reason for my success because there’s something unique about it. If it was Toronto or Montreal there would be so much more competition, but the fashion industry here is small and relatively new. Everyone wants everyone to be successful so Ottawa can become a fashion destination.”

Wark thinks that being a student is the most fun time to dress.

“It’s the perfect time to dress however you want, it’s not like you have to dress a certain way for work. Most of the time you’re either in class or spending time with friends. It’s the best time to discover what you like and don’t like, that way when you get older you’re able to take parts of the things you love and incorporate them into your everyday life.”

But fashion-forward students also face challenges; putting it bluntly, who has the money?

Wark, however, has some advice on 10 basic things you need in your wardrobe to get a great look no matter who you are. All you need to do is couple these basic items with fun accessories and colours.

  • A pair of dark grey or blue denim pants
  • A blouse
  • Dress pants
  • A pair of black boots
  • Fitted blazer
  • Nude pump
  • A-line or pencil skirt (depending on your body shape)
  • Wool or cashmere sweater in a basic colour
  • Leather jacket
  • A great handbag to fit your lifestyle

Now students can retire from the UGG boot, sweat pant and messy hair combo. But Wark doesn’t blame students for adopting that style every once in a while.

“I used to do that too,” she said. “That’s when you’ve pulled an all-nighter studying and you’re lazy. You don’t want to get into the habit of that but unfortunately a lot of women succumb to it. They get into a rut and they dress like that. Sometimes friends and family need to push them out of it, or they can call me.”

“When you don’t look good you don’t feel good. Dressing is all about looking good and feeling confident,” she said.

Freelancing as a personal stylist, Wark goes through clients’ wardrobes and makes a grocery list of things they’re missing. She then takes her clients shopping and teaches them how to put a look together.

“That’s a whole other part of my business,” she said. “I don’t really promote it, it’s more by referral, and I’ve purposely lowered my rates so anyone can afford me. People often assume stylists are unattainable and hundreds of dollars an hour.”

But how did she learn this? Her post-secondary education includes a degree in journalism from the joint Algonquin – Ottawa U program, but nothing in fashion-omics.

“I started modelling when I was 13 years old and I think a huge part of the creativity styling aspect is through that,” she said.

“I think you’re born with something like that too. Even in high school, before I had any clue on what I wanted to do with my life I was rocking four-inch heels to class. My boyfriend hated me because he looked like such a shrimp next to me.”

Wark also does a lot of research, like all journalists do.

“When I feel uninspired I go online and look through some of my favourite magazines,” she said.

Besides being a personal stylist, Wark has also done two internships in New York City, she’s a freelance journalists for Flare magazine, Ottawa magazine and the Ottawa Citizen, an avid blogger and the resident stylist for the CBC TV show, Steven and Chris.

With a laundry list of experience like that, Wark’s success seems like it may have come easy.

“You have to put in your time,” she said. “I’ve done so many free, unpaid things and it’s really hard. Always take the unpaid jobs and get your resume pumped up and your portfolio strong. Get enough substance so it can really last,” is the advice that Wark gives students just starting out.

“Our generation is a little backwards; a lot of people think that things will just be handed to them. They think that if they have a degree they can just get a job, but now everyone has degrees.”
