Actress Octavia Spencer strutted her stuff down the red carpet at the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium on Sunday evening (January 29) in Los Angeles, California.

Octavia, 41, wore a pretty white and silver Tadashi Shoji iridescent chiffon gown with an embellished and beaded bodice.  The dress is also cinched on the side to fit her body perfectly and showed off her curves.  Octavia completed her look with silver Stuart Weitzman sandals, Irene Neuwirth earrings and a grey Judith Leiber clutch.

After years of being a jobbing actor, Octavia Spencer is finally enjoying her place in the sun.  She picked up the 2012 SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her work in The Help.

Even though she has scooped up a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award within the past month, there is one thing that is concerning The Help actress.  Backstage at the Hollywood event on Sunday night, the 41-year-old admitted that her weight was causing her some concern.

Eileen Roche and Nancy Zieman

I just finished watching an episode of “Sewing with Nancy” and she had a guest named Eileen Roche. She and Nancy have teamed up to make the most gorgeous hand-sewn handbags while adding machine embroidery to give it a real designer look. I was really impressed with the final look of the bags compared to many, many handmade bags I’ve seen over the years. I think the extra few minutes it took to add the embroidery to the bag made a huge difference to me, if I were a buyer.  As a clothing and accessory designer/artist myself, this got me excited! What a difference that detail makes! Plus, the machine does all the work. This is definitely making me scratch my head, considering the purchase of an embroidery machine. Hmmmmm.

Now to all you talented hand-embroidery artists, what a gorgeous bag you could make! I would love for my embroidering friends to post some pictures of some of your artwork, simple or complicated. I’d love to see if any of you have embroidered on handbags.

In need of an accessories update, I made my own purse.

While I was constructing it, I encouraged it to be completely reversible

The handle, when it is a purse, is doubled, so there are four holes, then folded over and make a stronger handle.

There are the handles ONLY being flipped out if you get bored with the outside handle fabric

There is also a strap for when I decide I want it to be a purse of messenger bag

There are four buttons at four different spots to adjust the length for a messenger bag, a short messenger bag, a purse or a higher up purse.

The strap is also detachable!

Julie Bowen, who was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, wore a modern fuchsia draped Temperley London dress, Martin Katz jewels, Christian Louboutin heels and a Judith Leiber clutch.

The entire cast of Modern Family won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, beating the casts of 30 Rock, Glee, The Big Bang Theory and The Office.

So recently I have been doing a ton of sewing, that I just can’t stop now. Once I create something, I move on to the next thing. Normally I just sew up some dresses just for the fun of it, but I thought maybe I could expand my skills by trying something new.

As usual I was on YouTube looking at my fave beauty guru SecretLifeofaBioNerd and I ran across one of her videos about DIY Bandeau’s. I was so intrigued at how simple it was to make this, that I just had to try it myself. So I ordered some stretch lace, lining lycra, and some lingerie elastic. My first bandeau came out pretty good, you know to be my first one.

So it may look a little stretched out and that is because when I was sewing, I kept pulling the lace when attaching the lingerie elastic. Which is not good at all. I cannot stress this enough, make sure when attaching the elastic make sure everything is relaxed! As far as the lace looking stretched, it fits pretty well. I have made two of these already and currently working on my third. I have 6 yards of stretch lace to use! I just wish I could find more colorful lingerie elastic. Any suggestions?

My second obsession is a little out of the norm for me. DIY handbags, wristlets, pouches, etc. I had some unused zippers in my sewing box and thought “What can I do with these?” So again on SecretLifeofaBioNerd’s YouTube channel, one of her videos about how she made a Silk Flower Chiffon Inspired Handbag is what really got me started. I didn’t add any flowers to mine, but just left it plain. My first one came out, well like it was my first one but my second one came out nearly perfect. These are super fun and simple to make.

Then, just when you thought I was getting started I had about 4 yards of batik cotton that I never use, so I made a pleated slouch bag. It took me about 4 hours to make and came out surprisingly great!

Now my pleats didn’t turn out as good as they did in the actual tutorial on CutOutandKeep but I was still very surprised at the outcome of this project. I’m currently in the process of making more bags, but not like this because I’d rather have my own original ideas. I’ll be sure to post my new creations as soon as I’m done with them.
