Dear Prima Bananas, With as much fanfare as possible on cyber space, we are happy to announce that h
LV, that is. New York may be the fashion capital, but the fab fakes you get in Chinatown are the absolute worst.
There aren’t many stores that you can walk into and literally want everything in sight. Actually, that’s not true. But when you walk into a Louis Vuitton showroom, you better know what you want. Research should have been done, styles studied and budgets established. You have to remain focused, stick to your guns, make your purchase and exit the premises. Otherwise, you walk out with either more than you intended on buying or something completely opposite of your original idea (better known as the wally-world-woes).
In Atlanta, you have two showrooms to choose from – Lennox Square or Saks at Phipps Plaza. I prefer the Lennox Square because they carry more. And I do mean more. However, once you’re in Saks Fifth Avenue, you are in paradise and can easily loose your mind, along with a couple of grand.
Today, I was in the mood for some of that unmistakable, ever so popular, craftsmanship. I found myself pulling up to Saks and skipping over to the Louis Vuitton department.
Of course, I broke my own rules. First off, I wasn’t 100% sure of which handbag I wanted. I wasn’t even 100% sure of which print I wanted – Monogram, Damier Ebene or Azur or the Mahinia leather. Second, my budget wasn’t locked down. I was mulling over a $1,500 budget but thought that might have been too high for a random Monday purchase. Then I upped it to $2,000.
I let Phillip Hwang convince me to try on his favorites (as if). There’s something about a tall, hip, Chinese man with radiating swag that gets the job done. I was torn between the Tivoli GM, pitilessly priced at $1,520 and the Galliera PM kindheartedly priced at $1,430. After receiving three votes and an hour having passed, I was walking out with my chocolate brown shopping bag that was holding my new Galliera PM.
What a pleasurable experience. Was I really excited about the box that my new bag was placed in? Yes, I was. What will I do with this gorgeous box now that I’m home and have no more hiding space? Chuck it with the Special K cereal box. After all, it’s not about the packaging, now is it?
What’s not to love? Mega variety. Although the styles change with the weather, the stylishness never fades. If the handle on your speedy bag begins to tear like mine did, they will repair/replace the handle. Just some of the reasons I will be back. I’m totally a bag snob.
Should I sell my first Louis Vuitton handbag or should I keep it?
Things to consider:
My first LV
I only used 3 times
I love LV
I love LV
I love LV
Why is it so difficult for me to make the decision?
My initial plan in writing this article on handbags was to give a brief description of each handbag and clutch accompanied by a slide show. However, I got carried away with my research and compiled so much rich material and human interest stories that I decided I had better share it with you as a series.
All women understand that a handbag can spice up any outfit and they want the perfect one to compliment their wardrobes. In America and the world over, handbags rank almost as high as shoes on the list of shopping craves.
Women’s purses are everywhere. They change in style and fabrics with the season and with other fashions. They come in a dizzying array of styles: shoulder bags, messenger or couriers, hoboes, buckets, and backpacks. All of these are larger bags designed for everyday use, intended to hold any number of items. So what does a woman do when she needs a purse for just the necessities? She uses a clutch purse, pompadour, pouchette, baggette, wristlet, or reticule!
Let’s walk through the list of ordinary to extraordinary and enjoy the slide show with samples of each.
Shoulder bags: Shoulder bags as the name implies is usually carried with a shoulder strap that may have a shoulder guard with the strap. They are unbeatable for back packing and school books.
Messenger Bag: Similar in function to backpacks, this bag usually has a cross body strap and is shaped to allow for couriers to carry documents, typically comes with a large flap. Of course, the history behind the style does not limit its usefulness for whatever you want to carry in this bag. The Prada Messenger bag has become very popular of late.
Hobo: The hobo bag is larger type handbag that is either crescent- or bundle-shaped and has shoulder straps that attach to the bag on the sides, not at the ends like a tote. It has a “slouchy” look.
Bucket: This roomy bag emerged in 1933, providing a popular, fun style which broke with tradition. The bucket bag has a stiff wide base and tall sides, fashioned after a bucket. It’s made from many different materials and is a great carryall.
Satchel: Satchel bag closes at the top and usually has a metal frame at the top opening that snaps shut, can be made of many materials, the side seams form a triangular shape.
Backpack purses: Backpack purses are the compact versions of the traditional full-size backpacks designed mostly for women. They are smaller but are still large enough to contain few needed essential items like cell phones, wallets, car keys, etc. Most backpack purses are made of leather, polyester, or vinyl.
Now put on the glitz and step out for the evening. For maximum impact, use beaded, silk brocade, or leather clutches to complement your outfit.
Clutch: A clutch is a small purse designed to be carried or clutched in the hand. Some have a detachable chain or leather strap so they can also be worn hanging from the shoulder. A clutch purse is not seen on an everyday basis as often as it used to be, but these little gems are still around in various forms.
Pompadour bags: Pompadour handbags are compact pouches originally made of lace and velvet and popularized by the Marquise de Pompadour in the 18th century. Used for storing money, handkerchiefs, smelling salts, and notebooks. Today, they can be made of organic materials like hemp but also fancy silk brocades used in weddings. The strap consists of o a long cord that serves as a closure for the handbag and for wrapping around the wrist.
Pochette bags: Pochette handbags are also called clutch bags. Very compact bags originally made without handles or straps. They are made of leather, nylon, or stiff fabric. They can be clutched under the arm or worn over the shoulder if they come with short shoulder straps.
Baguette: Baguette handbags are characterized by their compact, narrow, and long structure – shaped like a long roll of bread, a French baguette. They originated from the earlier bags designed for carrying long or oblong objects. They can be made of stiff canvas or leather dyed in different colors or printed in a variety of designs. They have shoulder straps that let the bags fall just under the arm. They are usually closed by metal or magnetic clasps set in front.
Reticule: The reticule or string bag is the mother of modern handbags typically made of crocheted, netted, or mesh fabric. It was birthed from necessity and convenience as an alternative way to carry personal items that used to be carried in dress pockets. Women began carrying reticules in the early 1800s, the forerunner of the modern handbag, looking very much as some styles of the clutch purse look today. A lady of quality carried her handkerchief and smelling salts, along with, perhaps, a packet of rice papers to dull a shiny spot on the face.
Wristlet: The wristlet is a very versatile handbag if the intention is for small toting. The bag is meant to be carried with a wrist strap although the bag itself is often a clutch style.
Haute couture will need to wait for another day. The name implies the use of expensive material and expertise in design and manufacturing. This type of bag has become well known due to the signature logo affixed to the bag. Typically a well known designer’s logo insures a certain level of quality in the manufacturing and represents that designer’s status within the world of fashion.

presented off-runway, the trussardi 1911 collections are always a sight to see. this season, similar concepts are presented as a palette of nude, black & red for contrast are added to a design filled with sleek leathers, sophisticated fur all with true italian style. creatively directed by milan vukmirovic, i love the modern approach to innovative style in combining a wide range of beautiful details like sheer textiles, leather handbags, leopard print alongside beautiful silhouettes. although i didn’t favor the gowns of at the close of the collection, the rest of the collection gave me such inspiration for style & a greater appreciation for the art of fashion design. though stylish & casual, the designs seen here are a combination of all the aspects i look for in fashion- bold concepts created with a minimal aesthetic & slight dramatization of classical style. stunningly stylish.

Some people gradually increase their purse size rather than pause at times and ponder what they actually need to be hauling with them daily.
Start by emptying your usual purse. Put daily essentials together: credit card or two, paper money, driver’s license, auto and health insurance cards, car/house/office keys, cell phone, eyeglasses.
Makeup, lip balm, a tissue pack are handy in a small makeup pouch.
Short-term items: receipts, coupons and recently collected business cards may be stored in a slim wallet.
If you switch often between purses, a transferable purse insert is a great option. Keep most of your daily essentials in the insert: credit card, paper money, license, auto and health insurance cards. Also, remember the Extra chECK rule: Eyeglasses, Cell phone, Keys must always be transferred.
When packing a larger purse with no insert, store often-retrieved items — cell phone, credit card, keys, eyeglasses — in easy access pockets or one side of the purse. A snap or Velcro loop for a keys ring is especially handy.
Ideally, on a weekly basis you should remove recent receipts, others’ business cards, expired/unneeded coupons, etc. and either process them into your records system or dispose of them.
