craft: a summer purse

Did you know H&M sells infant and toddler clothing? Cause they do and they are super cute and affordable. Plus I have a love for European anything so dressing my son in European inspired clothing is something that makes me laugh and smile. I always get suckered into the low low prices and end up with something funky that has me scratching my head. On our last trip I think I went a bit overboard cause my son has been sporting some wacked out stuff. And not like “that’s cool” we’re talking “OMG, what did I do.” Going forward I’ll need to practice better restraint.

On our recent trip for some H&M toddler clothing I picked up a bag for myself that was $13. I think I must have been having a moment where carrying my fancy purse had me feeling bogged down and frustrated. So I thought, nice summer bag and it’s cheap. Before I knew it I was also holding a fist full of faux flowers that are intended to adorn your hair. They were cheap enough so I got a few and decided to make a craft project out of my goodies.

Well this trip to H&M was about two months ago and I’ve been a bit slow to complete a few different projects. Sunday I decided it was time to get going and made an effort to work on a few things. With a bit of pins and hot glue I came up with this. Despite the flowers having a loud plastic center I do like them.

What do you think of my summer purse? I myself just love the flirty-ness of the flowers. The way the petals curl is simply perfect.

Follow the latest handbag trends…

According to Vogue the latest handbag trend is small and should be carried in the hand. While this isn’t a practical choice for daywear it does add more than just a dash of glamour to an evening outfit. There are a number of exciting handbag trends currently being showcased along catwalks this season and many of the styles aren’t for the faint-hearted.

Current handbag trends for spring/summer season 2009:

  • Clashing python clutch bags – sassy and bold, these reptilian bags make a strong statement with their highly textured fabric and eye-opening colour schemes.

Dior Homme Menswear for Spring 2010

Kris Van Assche being a fashion designer, gave his latest collection for Dior Homme a full blast of hot waves despite of a “Cold Love” theme. He knew the knives were out. The temperature in his runway hit the “surface of the sun” that he never anticipated the heat served to heighten the much appreciated high layers of ultralight tailoring.

Dior HommeTwo years ago from the start of his appointment, Dior Homme designer Kris Van Assche has wrestled exclusively for men and women’s suit. This season the superfluity of a tailored blazer can be seen on the label’s collection as a sensible sartorial response to climatic change.
The designer influenced by his gym-bodied quality that can be seen under the transparent jackets layered over untucked wide T- shirts in tones of creamy gray and skin-tone beige as billowy robes with matching hefty high-top footwear.

The shirt-weight craftsmanship is said to be the label’s new development, and the transparent parka over a sleeveless jacket captured from past season’s trends.

For evening outfits, the designer suggested kimonolike lapels in sleeveless form. In contrast to his previous Dior Homme endeavor, all the pared-down vigor gives him a strong foundation to build on for the future campaign.

Gucci Men Spring 2010 Milan Fashion Week

The house of Gucci showcased its Spring 2010 menswear through a runway show last June 21 with a strong inspiration to the work of Latin American architect, Oscar Niemeyer.

White as the key opening color of this spring 2010 was inspired by Niemeyer who designed a certain number of his buildings in white. Niemeyer’s lifeworks are generally curvilinear and based on reflecting and imitating the abundance and altered fauna of his native Brazil. In contrast to the latest clothing lines of Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini were largely linear and straight.

The collections are looked great in an excellent series of evening looks. Designed with tapered pants cut off above the ankle and fine two-button suits made in cool jacquards and silks in wonderful hues of indigo and burnt rose.

The Gucci menswear, besides of its less Brazilian style had even little to do with modern men’s fashion. Some of them looked too familiar from Giannini’s most recent collections for the brand and their New Wave rocket attitude.

The designer also showcased a series of surfer looks made of modern nylons and micro fibers, but looks seem someone who had never actually surfed designed them.

“High tech kite surfer,” said Gianinni, who confessed to not having really tried the sport. “My arms are too weak,” she laughed. (yahoo fashion news)

Oscar Niemeyer never recognized his ideas in this Gucci collection even his buildings tapped directly into his immediate and exotic environment for inspiration.

Matters of the Heart

Hey,

Well I’ve finally finished making the Clutch bags for the lovely Tess and her bridal party, that I told you about a few weeks back.  So several damask lovelys are currently winging their way across the pond to her and her bridesmaids – I hope she loves them!  Together we decided on a neutral cream and white damask print cotton as the basis for the bags.  We then trimmed this in a gorgeous layer of ribbon in deepest plum, classic ivory and touches of gold.  The bags were all lined in cream cotton and had a beautiful mother-of-pearl effect button stack as closure.  I so enjoyed working closely with someone other than my often design-fatigued brain, to create something special – even though measuring, cutting, pinning and sewing 5 Clutches turned out to be more demanding than I thought it would!  So here be the spoils:

I’ve had quite a few custom orders lately actually, which is really good for the old sewing self-esteem! I’ve had some successful bids through Etsy’s Alchemy system, which is great as I really enjoy undertaking a specific design and creating something unique and giving someone exactly what they had envisioned.  So feel free to hit me up if you want something wondrous made in a certain fabric, as I’m always more than happy to flex my thread into creating your specific ideas.  I’ve also been toying with the idea of introducing a few new designs into the store – namely glasses pouches (after an alchemy request for one was snapped up and I’ve since made a few of them, so sensing a possible gap in the market!) so watch this space if you’re on the lookout for somewhere to store those vintage sunnies!

Today finds me rather pooped (read exhausted – yes, exhausted at 7pm!) after spending a day at my nephew’s 2nd birthday party.  So an afternoon of too much cake, too many egg sandwiches, too high a number of screaming toddlers – plus a playhouse and sandpit – does not a happy Amy make.  Here’s the little man in all his birthday glory, now this is mischievousness (word?!) personified:

In other news, I am currently most loving Florence and the Machine.  Caught her on Jonathon Ross (which I don’t normally watch I shall admit now, but the wall-to-wall Michael Jackson coverage was starting to grate somewhat) last night and I am instantly in love with her style.  She has a vintage, romantic yet edgy look about her and her music – perfect Summer fare.  So I shall love you and leave you with Rabbit Heart…

The Saharan theme creates a lively setting in stylish beige leather tops and bags with patchwork covered the show. A wide array of colors such as palette of khaki, white and sand is being used on silk muslin and crumpled leather fabrics.

Prada Men Spring 2009/2010 Milan Fashion Week

The designer, Miuccia Prada came up with some latest fashion for men in a Milan where the overriding feeling is of designers twist from their own previous body of work.

The spring 2010 menswear collection was covered and mixed with colors ranging from black to white made up of quotes from confusing movies to a great new stage set of wet shade walls.

You could imagine the show seems a somber summer moment because of quotes in giant two-foot-high script and the charcoal foam seating to the collection itself, largely made up of various takes on gray.

Miuccia once said: “A movie, in black and white,” floated around with trays of the ideal, color coordinated cocktail – a White Russian. Even though it was restricted in color, this is one of the most innovative shows ever in Milan collections.

The designer remake her own silhouette and tailoring in an excellent way exclusively for Milan. The newest innovative thing could be found on jackets where the jacket lapel is drawn out to the belly button and even double-breasted looks have just two buttons.

The Prada’s accessory department also had an excellent part to the whole transparency trend of this four-day Italian event. The house showcased perforated leather shoes and pork pie hats and see-through dusters in a mesh nylon material paired with sneakers and fishing gears.
