Handmade Hotspot – Handbags

Over the coming weeks and months we’ll be doing a number of features on some of the fabulous people across the UK that design and make all the lovely gifts and accessories you see at Kitty and Polly’s online store.
First up is the lovely Emma Gordon who handmakes many of the gorgeous clutch bags you’ll see in our shop. Now I know that there are lots of fabulous bags out there but I think the finishing touches on Emma’s clutches really make them stand out..these are classic, elegant bags that are pretty much timeless (in our view, anyway!). We caught up with Emma recently to ask her a few questions.aspiring handbag designers take note !

WHEN DID YOU FIRST START MAKING HANDBAGS?
I set up my business in 2003. I had studied Applied Arts where I made a conceptual range of handbags for my final project. I then went to work for a handbag manufacturer in London designing
bags for high street shops. It was here that I learnt the ropes and
got the confidence to branch out on my own and set up my own label

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE STYLE OF YOUR HANDBAGS?

My bags are always ladylike with a twist. I like to keep a quirky
edge throughout each collection by using cute detailing such as bows, buttons and polka dot or stripy linings.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN YOU START DESIGNING A NEW COLLECTION?
I take my inspiration from everything elegant and ladylike. I love to
mix this with quirky detailing to keep my bags cute and humorous. I
love the light-hearted glamour of Audrey Hepburn in ‘Breakfast at
Tiffanys’ and the gorgeous pin-up girls of the 1950’s.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT DESIGNING HANDBAGS?
The thing I most enjoy is getting orders from all over the world.
It’s such a nice thought to imagine lots of girls around the planet
using my bags!

WHICH OTHER DESIGNERS DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST?

My absolute favorite designer label is Moschino Cheap and Chic. I
love the way they mix elegant shapes and immaculate quality with
quirky patterns and details. For classic styling I love the timeless
styling of Chanel.

ANY TIPS/ADVICE FOR ASPIRING HANDBAG DESIGNERS OUT THERE?
My advice to aspiring designers is to get a website! Once your
collection is ready and photographed put it on your website – this is
a 24 hour portfolio that is available to everybody in the world. You
could have the most beautiful products, but if no one can see them you can’t sell anything.

WHAT THINGS HAVE YOU GOT PLANNED FOR THE FUTURE?

I have recently been making lots of order for weddings – for both
brides and bridesmaids. It’s been very successful so far so I am
planning to develop a range of bridal bags and accessories.

So, if you feel like indulging your handbag obsession, why not head over to our handmade handbags and treat yourself to a beautifully designed bag made by hand. Remember, we are offering 10% off to the end of June and all customers placing orders will have the chance to win a gorgeous hair accessory! And shipping is free when you spend £40 or more.

You don’t need to be on diet to look fabulous with your favorite handbags. Being fab is all about what you are wearing, on how you match and use the current trends.

Primarily, there are variety of handbags which are trendy this spring and summer 2009. Different sizes ranges from huge totes to tiny clutches are “IN” and quiet ample.

Quick post – Camden

From polished designer high fashion to my crazy space outfit, now I bring you to the other side of the town, Camden Town. I only very recently discovered it’s about 25 minutes walk from my place, why the hell didn’t I go earlier. Camden is crazy, full on, energetic and just plain awesome. It’s the ultimate place for clashes of fashion, from gothic lolitas, to punks, rockabillies, indie kids, high street kids, vintage gals, hip hop boys, it really shouts “youth of Britain today” to me.

Today I went for a stroll again armed with my camera!

Quick post - Camden

Camden market is a huge market that interconnects many sections, with indoor and outdoor space, they sell anything from vintage wear to designer rip offs and everything in between. I found myself a nice little something for £6! More about that another time. Cyberdog is crazy! Rave music turned up loud pumping straight through me, those fluro detective lights that showcase the special ink on their tshirts, robotic mannequins line the walls. Some of the womens clothes were very avant garde, I can see how a piece or 2 combined with high street stuff can become a very edgy and cool outfit. Now why didn’t I go there before my space themed party, oh well, at least I know now for next time.

So here are 2 quick shots from today.

A Wedding Designed… Jennifer and Jason

I blogged earlier this week about Jennifer and Jason’s wedding. What a beautiful day! The bride Jennifer is actually trained as an interior designer, and I was particularly impressed by the way she maintained the same relaxed modern romantic feel throughout all the details of her day. So to showcase all her hard work and maybe inspire some other brides out there, I’m sharing the results of her hard work with you!

First the invitations… Jeremy Stebler, brother of the bride, is a talented graphic designer. With the bride and groom’s input, he designed and had the invitations (and programs and thank you’s) printed, then assembled them all by hand. The result is gorgeous! And such wonderful quality in materials, too. I recommend him without reserve. (Stebler Creative, 412-977-5591)

And of course a shot of the programs (taken at the church)…

On to the bridal details… Jennifer’s clutch purse and pearl bracelet/necklace, followed by a shot of her shoes. To see more pictures of her dress and hair, stop by my earlier post about the wedding day. You can also see photos of the groomsmen’s and bridesmaids’ outfits there. Want to know more details? Just ask.

Love the simple fuschia rose and soft green tie set against the khaki suit!

And those simple green clutch bouquets for the bridesmaids were positively inspired!

Of course a shot of the bride’s bouquet as well. Beautiful.

After the formal religious ceremony, it was off to Greystone Fields for the reception! The venue is a modern two-story farmhouse-ballroom built on acres and acres of land in Gibsonia, about an hour outside of Pittsburgh. It seemed to fit in perfectly with the bride’s design aesthetic, and the folks there were incredibly gracious and easy to work with.

The guests were greeted at the patio with rows of park bench placecards, incorporating the same design as the invitations/programs/thank you’s. The tables of lush green grass were grown at a nearby farm specifically for this purpose.

The guests mingled in the ballroom, surrounded by walls of uncluttered windows.

I liked the cohesive mixture of modern (check out those green plants!) and rustic (the black lanterns).

The lantern theme was also carried into the guests’ favors, small white lanterns at each table.

…along with more modern romantic touches befitting a farmhouse…

Tables were marked with tall twigs. (Notice the same design as the invitations/programs/thank you’s!)

And how creative were these centerpieces! An assortment of small cakes propped up on thick twigs, coming out of lush grass boxes. The small cakes were a wonderfully elegant take on the recently popular cupcake option. Each guest chose their own, once dinner wrapped up.

Here is a shot of the bride and groom’s cake, which was displayed on a table of moss.

Of course there was a gift table complete with creative card storage :)

…and no Pittsburgh wedding is complete without a cookie table!!

What a beautiful wedding! More importantly, it was creative and unique. Isn’t that what every bride is looking for? Great job, Jennifer.
