Bio
Hong Kong Willie. Hippie artist of the 60’s in the now. Hippie artist and Florida folk artist, living the life of using objects for many uses. Look at the travels of life.

Hong Kong Willie. The name of the artist. In 1958 his mother took Hong Kong Willie to an art class. The name started then. An art teacher when doing crafts out of Gerber baby bottles, made a statement, in Hong Kong reuse was common. At that time he thought this was very interesting. His father had low-land, at that time landfills were common also. The county had told Hong Kong Willie’s father, it was safe, but as we now know this was not so. Something can come from bad to be good. Hong Kong Willie the name came from that art teacher impressing on that young mind that objects made for one use could be for many other uses. Hong Kong for the neat concept. Willie for an American name. So for many years Hong Kong Willie had a life of reuse. Hong Kong Willie saw forms in a different light, His life now was meaningful, knowing this was and would be his life. Art made from found objects, making less of a footprint on this world. Art and art teachers, HOW IMPORTANT. For the ones that have, and the ones who have not. Media can be found. Now 50 years later, we know now being green is important. We need to look at this very carefully. Our children and our world need a different understanding. Objects can be used in many different ways. Hong Kong Willie the tons of objects in his life that have been used, without much change, So for that art teacher what she did for my life. Thank You. I still have the Gerber baby bottle till this day. Hong Kong Willie.

Looking outside of the box, learning to find solutions in a positive way. Complaining without a solution is like trying to wake a dead man. Nothing is going to happen. The solution to leaving less of a foot print on this earth is left to each one of us. Finding the positive side and focusing positive energy is change for the good. Hong Kong Willie has for many years looked outside of the box. Take a look at the other story told by University of South Florida on ways to change and the social impact we all can make. To live and help and not complain and spend that energy to leave less of a foot print is a good thing.

Recycling as a Lifestyle and a Business
By:
Chris Futrell, Florida Focus

TAMPA, Fla. – Have you ever seen the building on the corner of Fletcher and I-75 with a bunch of buoys strung everywhere? This small business that many think is an old bait n’ tackle shop is actually Hong Kong Willie.

Derek Brown, 26, and his family own and operate Hong Kong Willie. The little shop specializes in preservation art. The artists don’t take preservation too lightly either.

“99 percent of everything that has gone into a piece of art has been recycled and reused,” Brown said.

Just as unique as the art is, so is the company’s name. Brown says the name was created by his father, Joe Brown, in the 1950s.

“My father being in an art class, being affected by a teacher, they were melting Gerber baby food bottles,” Brown said. “The teacher interjected that Hong Kong had a great reuse and recycling program even then.”

Brown’s father then took that concept and later added the Americanized name Willie to the end. And that’s how Hong Kong Willie was born as a location that offers recycling in a different and creative way.

Hong Kong Willie artists are what are known as freegans. Freegans are less concerned with materialistic things and more concerned about reducing consumption to lessen the footprint humans leave on this planet.

“I’m sure everyone has their own perception of a freegan, possibly jumping into a dumpster or picking up something on the side of the road,” Brown said. “There [are] people who will have excess. There [are] also things that can be trash to one man, but art or a prize to another man.”

Brown and his family carry this practice through to their art. It’s his family’s way of life, turning trash, which would otherwise fill up landfills, into an art form.

The Brown family gets a lot of their inspiration for their art from the Florida Keys. In fact, this is where the deluge of buoys wrapping around the ‘Buoys Tree’ came from, the fishermen of Key West.

“It is Styrofoam, we understand that it does not degrade, but to blame the fishermen for their livelihood wouldn’t be correct, instead we find a usage for those,” Brown said.

Brown said there’s a usage for everything, even the hooks to hold the painted driftwood, which are also salvaged, to the wall are old bent forks. Everything’s reused here. Purses made out of old coffee bean sacks to “kitschy,” as Brown described it, jewelry made from old baseballs.

“Hong Kong Willie truly believes that a piece, whether it’s a bag or a painted artwork, it’s meant for one person.”

Bags 101: My Valentine Dilemma :-)

If I’m dreaming, don’t wake me up…

lv7

Last night, hubby and I were strolling after dinner (HHWWPSSP), and as usual we were talking about many things… Then he asked me what I wanted for Valentine’s Day… I couldn’t think of anything because I never really thought much about Valentine’s Day, except that we had already made plans for a dinner date…

Hubby: ”What do you want nga?”

Me: ”Nothing, really… uhmm, anything…” (I’d be happy with flowers, though.)

Hubby: (After 1 hour of prodding) “Ok just pick your choice…  bag, necklace, or bracelet?”

Me: “Bag?? You just gave me a bag for Christmas…” (my thoughts zoomed back to our closet and apartment.. hmm not much space for an extra bag…)

Hubby: ”Are you sure you don’t want an LV bag?”

Me: ”LV bag?! Are you serious? That’s expensive!” (crossed my fingers in my pocket)

Hubby: ”So?”

Me:  (Pakipot for 30 mins.) “uhmm.. well I guess it’s now or never.. ok, ba-a-a-g??”

Hubby: *smiles* “I knew it! Ok let’s buy it this weekend.”

And I thought to myself:

“Whoah, that soon? I’m not ready yet… I need lessons in Bags 101… Uh-oh, I AM clueless.”

A signature bag is something that I have always secretly wanted… something that I knew I would someday want to buy, but it wasn’t really my priority so I never went into stores like LV, Chanel, Gucci, Balenciaga etc. to check the hottest designs (except a few minutes in Louis Vuitton Champs Elysees, where the salesperson didn’t really bother to attend to me haha)…

(PONDER-MODE: During lunch, I went into my ponder-mode, and asked myself what I really wanted… But what I really, really want is too difficult to have coz only God can grant it…  I want only ONE thing, and that’s good health for my parents and our whole family.  I would not think twice of dropping LV’s and signature stuff in exchange for my loved ones good health…)

BUT for now… who would say no to Louis Vuitton?

So, I have to find MY PERFECT BAG soon. All I know is that I like bags that are sturdy, simple, not too fancy, not much frou-frous and blings, classic, and in plain colors that would go well easily with different clothes.

Something that I won’t outgrow for a loooong time. Maybe not necessarily LV. That’s negotiable.. hehe.. Would love to hear your tips and advice!

I feel so lucky with my hubby… I wasn’t expecting this coz he’s usually very practical… Hmmm.. he must be very happy with the food I cook for him… Nah.. he must really love me. Awww…

:-)

Uh-oh.. here comes Dilemma #2… I can’t think of anything to give him for Valentine’s!  ;P

Ohhh… honestly, thank you Lord for this kind of headaches… they’re lovely headaches. :-)

Hobo’s Wallets, Purses and things…

hobo13

How is it possible that I had not heard of Hobo purses/wallets/bags? I saw this sleek black wallet in Bloomies the other day and LOVE IT. It’s neat, shiny and not bulky. Plus the inside has a lot of compartments and has a cute pattern. The one I saw had black and white houndstooth, but I can’t find it online. Must find wallet.

Oh and I can’t forget about  how cute and practical these clutches are!

Handbags not Hobags

Classy beauties would never be caught dead with an el cheapo ghetto handbag. They want to impress the other girls, and outdo one another. They want girls they work with to say “oh i love your purse, you have impeccable taste.” I personally think buying an expensive bag is a waste of money and an illustration of how just easily people in our society are manipulated by perceived value marketing tactics, but I’m also a guy…so that could be why I don’t give a rats ass in a room full of cats how expensive a broad’s handbag was.

But seriously ladies if you’re going to do it…go with the best. Buy a Marc Jacobs bag.

31 Corn Lane’s totally handmade purses!

picture-1 I just got this handmade purse by Indie Designers, 31 Corn Lane. It’s a small company started by 3 sisters and   they make these adorable purses, totes and wallets. Inside, they are lined with bright eclectic material. I love this purse! Check below for an interview they did on Threadbanger.com.

Black purse and brooches

dscf2318Again, 20p each from the Crowborough jumble sale; I get through vintage purses fairly quickly, using them as make-up/toiletries bags, so will set this practically-sized one aside (along with a couple of others already laid away…) for future need. I like the silver leaf brooch, and the gaudy gold rose; the others could make good presents. I already have a box – somewhere – of vintage cufflinks for boy-friends, so brooches for girls will tie up nicely.

Snap Happy

Hey,

So it has been the most mind-numbing weekend ever as I spent both days of it welded to my computer so that I could edit my photos for all the items in my Etsy store.  Add to this spending the whole of Friday re-taking my photographs and it safe to say I have a headache, square eyes and a sore arse!

I think it’s been worth it though, as the inconsistency of my images always bothered me and at least now all my products are on a crisp, neutral background and appear (fingers crossed) that little bit more professional.  It’s all thanks to the lovely Jeannine from Iansmomma who so kindly walked me through using the photo editing software GIMP to achieve the look I wanted, after seeing my plea on one of the Etsy critique threads.  So swing by her gorgeous store, where you can check her stunning collection of natural aromatherapy heat packs, eye pillows, candles and other luxurious herbal products – perfect for gifts or treats for yourself!

Also please let me know what you think of my photography facelift!  I think it really makes my designs pop, and am hoping the clearer, more vivid pictures will lead to more sales (more fingers crossing.)  I’m continuing my efforts to make Wonderland Boutique go in a more vintage-shaped direction via my choices of fabric and my designs.  I’m starting to incorporate vintage buttons and adding touches of ribbon to lovely Amy Butler, Tina Givens and Heather Bailey fabrics which really embody that retro feel I’m trying to replicate.  Also, I’ve had some interest in stocking my designs in a local gallery/boutique so hopefully I’ll have some more news about that endeavour soon (even more finger crossing!)

So I’ll leave you with a few examples of my updated pics hoping that they can help in taking Wonderland Boutique to where I want it to be:
